What is the mission of your organization? | |
Ethan’s Purpose is a local non-profit foundation dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of good mental health and suicide prevention. When our son, Ethan Thomas, died by suicide in September 2018, we started Ethan’s Purpose. Our goal is to help other families who may be struggling with the same challenges that Ethan faced. Ethan was adopted and was diagnosed with anxiety, depression and ADHD. I was unaware at the time of how all of these factors played a part in Ethan’s mental health, and was unaware of how I could help him learn strategies to help him cope with these challenges. I have made it my mission to arm other families with the tools and resources to help their children so they do not need to walk this journey that we are on.
Our foundation provides small group counseling services at Conner High School, Conner Middle School, Thornwilde Elementary, North Pointe Elementary, and Bellevue High School. We have partnered with Katherine Salisbury with Pathfinder Counseling Services to provide Social Emotional Learning to students selected by each school’s counselor and administration. Students are selected, screened and permission received from parents/guardians before services begin. Each program runs six weeks and students are assessed before and after each program session to determine the effectiveness of the counseling services. Data is then used to determine if more intensive help is needed and if the program being provided is effective. |
